Fails the update to release

Using Windows 11. I try to update from ESR (version 140.13) to the release path. It concludes with a pop-up saying I must "reboot to finish a Thunderbird de-install" (or words to that effect). I reboot and it hasn't done anything. Version 140.13ESR is still present and if I repeat the update to release, the same thing happens.

I fear if I use the W11 tools to de-install Thunderbird altogether before re-installing TB from scratch, I'll lose all my existing email.

How do I do it?

All your data such as messages, passwords and user preferences, and changes made while you use Thunderbird, are stored in a special folder called a profile. Your profile folder is stored in a separate place from the Thunderbird program, so that if something ever goes wrong with the Thunderbird program your information will still be there. It also means that you can uninstall Thunderbird and reinstall without losing your settings and data. But storing it separately is NOT a backup. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

It worked fine to first de-install using W11 tools, then re-install from scratch. Thanks.
