I have been using startpage.com for awhile and I had computer problems and we reloaded the operation system but now it will not go to startpage.com? My desktop computer will go to the site and it works great. What am I missing? Thanks Stocky

What happens when you try to go to startpage.com? Is there a specific error message?

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

When I try to go to startpage.com it just sits there and then times out saying it could not find the page. I can see other pages just fine. My cache and cookies clear each time I close my browser. Okay, I just checked and there were no cookies as I just opened my browser and I cleared the cache and retried startpage but it just timed out. Is Ctrl+Shift+r the same as hitting F5? Those are good suggestions but I think this is going to be a little more elusive than that! Any other thought would be appreciated and tried! Stocky

Hi Stocky, a regular reload will use cached files when it can, and Ctrl+Shift+r ignores cached files, so it is a full/fresh reload. If you clear the cache at shutdown, then I agree you should get the same result on your first load.

Can you get to any other pages on the server, such as:

https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.html

If you try IE on the same system, can it reach the site?

If IE has the same issue, I would suspect some external filtering software or a problem with your DNS service provider.

If the problem is only in Firefox, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?

You should be able to get to the site. Can you get to the related site https://ixquick.com/ ?

I'm a little suspicious about the blockage. Could you check your connection setting in Firefox here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

The default is "Use system proxy settings" which should share settings with IE, but you also could try "No proxy" to see whether that helps.

In case one of your extensions is involved, could you test the page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

Changing it to NO Proxy seems to solve the problem. Is it safe to run that way all the time. What is No Proxy actually doing? You are a very smart man! ( I hope that is politically correct? ) How do you know that? THANK YOU for your help! It is very refreshing to find folks that will help a poor soul like me! The most important thing about this post is can I run with it set to NO PROXY all the time or will that cause some other problems? Thanks, Stocky
