Whenever I try to view a you tube video on Firefox, I get a black screen with the following text:

Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available. Click here to visit our frequently asked questions about HTML5 video.

When I click on the link, I am taken to a page that show the browser supports HTMLVideoElemnet, H.264, WebM VP8, Media Source Extensions, and MSE & H.264. Only MSE & WebM VP9 is not supported.

What can I do to see You Tube videos with the FireFox browser?

What's your computer system and Firefox version?

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I have this problem. If I start in safe mode it works. However I cannot see that there is any setting in Firefox that I can alter to stop this blocking even after altering the settings in the Addons for Flash.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or it could be Hardware Acceleration. How to disable Hardware Acceleration {web link}

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All Of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is, detective.

This thread is a like a crazy party where new guests keep showing up at the door because they heard some loud music and you have no idea who they are!

I guess in this case, the problem is they didn't hear any music.

Hi wibbwebb:

If your Windows is Windows XP, that's a very special (difficult) situation and you should look for other threads about HTML5 video on XP.

If you're not on XP: What are your results on the HTML5 test page: https://www.youtube.com/html5 -- which squares are red, if any?

If the HTML5 page is good, try the Safe Mode test to see whether YouTube works normally. In its Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

The OP put up a sign, saying Live music - one guest is hoping for pop music, the other one has his heart set on rock'n'rol and the other is crazy about jazz. What genre the OP has in mind, remains a mystery ......
