It takes a long time to get emails, I click on one and I get a message that Thunderbird is not responding and I may get a box that asks me to inter my password

As I open TB to get mail, it takes several minutes to receive them, or I get a message to enter my password. I will eventually get the mail, I try to open, and I get at the top of the page that TB is not responding, I continue to click, the screen goes semi-white and the email if finally opened.
