Greetings...

I’m using Firefox Quantum - 61.0.1 (64-bit) as my default web browser. For as long as I can recall, I’ve been able to select hotlinked text or images that appear in e-mail messages that I’ve received and the content would open in my Firefox web browser without difficulty. Suddenly and recently (within the past two weeks), when I select any of these hotlinked text or images that appear in e-mail messages, nothing happens – absolutely nothing – no error messages, and Firefox doesn’t open.

However, when I change my default web browser to Internet Explorer or some other web browser, the hotlinked text or images that appear in e-mail messages will open in the default web browser when selected. My hunch is that a recent Firefox version change may be the source of this difficulty.

I use Windows Live Mail as my e-mail client software. I routinely receive WLM e-mail messages that contain textual and image hotlinks that I’ve been able to click on, which would open the information in my Firefox web browser. Then, sometime in the past week or two, I’ve noticed that when I’ve clicked on the WLM e-mail message textual or image hotlinks, nothing would occur – nothing.

My first diagnostic step was to copy the textual or image hotlink source information and paste it into my Firefox web browser - the information would open in my Firefox web browser without difficulty. Based on these results, it appeared that Firefox was no longer recognizing the WLM e-mail message textual or image hotlink as a hotlink.

My second diagnostic step was to change my default web browser from Firefox to Internet Explorer. Next, I opened a WLM e-mail message that contained a textual and an image hotlink and clicked on each of the hotlinks – both opened immediately in Internet Explorer, just as they *used* to open in Firefox. So, it’s my hunch that sometime in the past week or two, my Firefox web browser version was updated, which resulted in this difficulty that I’ve encountered.

I can't recall making any changes in the Options section of my Firefox web browser in the past two weeks, which is why I attribute this difficulty to a version update of my Firefox web browser. I'd prefer to use Firefox as my default web browser, so I'd appreciate any thoughts you might have as to the source of this difficulty and any corrective action that I might be able to implement to restore this functionality for my continued use.

However, if this difficulty is associated with a version update of my Firefox web browser, I'd appreciate your recommendation what next steps I should take to share this information with Mozilla so that they can investigate and implement appropriate corrective action.

Thank you very much for your assistance!

Hello,

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
