When this occurs seems to be unpredictable.

Further, sometimes when I open Firefox, it's either a tiny window in the top left corner and I have to maximise it, or it goes from where it's pinned to the taskbar to the top left, but it isn't actually visible (only the movement from the taskbar to the corner is visible).

Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks for your help, but it didn't work. When I re-opened Firefox, this time the window was only approx 4cm square.

Try to resize that window after starting Firefox and then close Firefox to save that data.
You can also try to create a new desktop shortcut to start Firefox.

Thanks for your help.

I've resized and closed.

The only shortcut I have is on my Programs menu, but I rarely use it - I keep it pinned to my taskbar.

I've just had a situation (for the 1st time, I think) where the browser opened minimised, and wouldn't maximise. When I clicked on the taskbar, I could quickly see it 'maximising' to the top left cormer, but it wasn't visible. I had to unpin & close it, then open it from the Programs menu.
