Firefox crashes after upgrade and re-install

Posted

I installed Firefox as an upgrade it crashed after using it for a bit. It was still active but I could no longer right click then I could not even switch tabs and could not close it. (I did a clean install from instructions here same thing)

When I went to Task manager and closed the application it said there was a dialog box open ( I assume the crash report but it was not visible anywhere)

Any suggestions?

Running Windows 7 ( Could not upgrade to 10 it caused issues and had to roll it back which caused even more- that i fixed but it had run fine on the old version) Core i5 8MB

From your description, it sounds less like a crash and more like Firefox is freezing. Unfortunately, this generally doesn't generate any useful crash report data. Does anything in this article help: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix

Yes it is a hang, went to that FAQ, disabled hardware accelerators and all seems fine and the browser FLYS!!!

Did you uinstall the old FF before installing FF57 and what version did you install? x85 or x64 of FF57? If you installed the old FF which probably was x86 and reinstalled x64 FF that would also cause problems. One should uninstall the old FF and then reinstall FF57 to be sure the problem didn't migrate from one FF to the other.

Hi Jssaab, sorry to hear about the crashes.

In the Windows 7 Task Manager, you have an Appliations tab that corresponds to visible windows. There also is a Processes tab which shows background processes that may not have a visible window. On the Processes tab, you can click the Image Name column to sort by the process file name. Here you may find frozen firefox.exe processes. You can right-click > End Process to terminate them if necessary. Alternately, you can shut down and restart Windows.

Yes I did it both ways, as an upgrade and then a clean install. I even went into the files folders renamed all of them .old and installed,

Yes I used x86...

From your description, it sounds less like a crash and more like Firefox is freezing. Unfortunately, this generally doesn't generate any useful crash report data.

You can try the 32-bit Firefox version to see if that works better for you.

You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (57.0.1) in all languages and all operating systems here:

Okay, that's good. Firefox has some incompatibility with your current display driver software. You could check for updates (although sometime, the incompatibility is with the updated version...). See: Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.
