Buttons in the upper right corner stop working, Firefox stops responding and other problems. Re-install does not help.
Hi!
Recently I started having troubles with Firefox. Shortly after I start it, buttons in the upper right corner (Menu button, Download button, etc.) stop working. Also, when I click in the search bar, a strange black window appears in the upper left corner. And after some more time Firefox just hangs and stops responding.
I tried to re-install Firefox and manually deleted c:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Mozilla\ folder before installing it again (but my browsing history and form data were not deleted, so they must be kept somewhere else). That helped for a short time but after a few days the same problems came up again.
How can I make Firefox working properly again?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Thank you. I've restarted Firefox in Safe Mode. Now have to wait for some time and see as the problem does not come up right away. I will let you know when I see something.
So, restarting in Safe Mode did not help. As usual, in the beginning everything was fine but after some time the buttons stopped working.

Yes. There are two folders in the user's computer account that are used.
Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar.
Unfortunately that did not help. For some time everything looked fine. Then I left the computer for about 30 min and, when I came back, the buttons stopped working again
Let’s do a full clean re-install;
Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}
Save the file. Then Close Firefox.
Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.
Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)
Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac
Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux
If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.
Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.
After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no
Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
I have gone through all of these steps with no resolution. This started when I updated to Quantum. After a Restore, Firefox is fine for 1 load, close and re-open and the issue is back.
If I run the app as "Run as administrator" all appears fine, but you can't force that when clicking a link.
Please assist, this is a big issue. I'm on Windows 10 Enterprise
Modified
Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
- download the Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop
*https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.
- do NOT remove "personal data" When you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
- (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
- (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
- it is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox
Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data When you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data When you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
If you keep having problems then you can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.
I was silent for some time but actually I tried all those steps (as suggested by FredMcD on 30 October) and that did not help. After the update to Quantum the situation became a little better. Before the update, when this problem would come up, I could not even stop Firefox - the small cross in the upper right corner would stop working too, as well as many other buttons. After the update I can at least close it. But the menu button invariably stops working after some time. So it looks like there is no solution.
If you have a problem shutting Firefox down,
How to crash Firefox (All Systems); Instructions here; https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/How_to_report_a_hung_Firefox
This link has a program that can crash Firefox.
Many have reported issues using the 64bit Firefox. Install the 32bit version from; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}
It's not about shutting Firefox. After the update to Quantum there is no shutting problem. But the problem of the buttons not working is still there.
This issue started when I installed Quantum.
Have you tried 32-bit?
No, I haven't. Should I? For me the problem started not after the update. I don't know what caused it, I did nothing special. It just started before Quantum was released. 64 bit Firefox was already installed on my PC. Should I try to replace it with 32 bit?
Many have reported issues using the 64bit Firefox. Install the 32bit version from; Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}
I have the same issue with 32-bit and 64-bit Firefox. I did a complete uninstall and deleted all local files.
Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link} Be sure to read everything here.
If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.
