The "HD" is a switch for Youtube. When on, it plays the video automatically in high def when possible. I've had it for a couple of years. The "A" on a paintboard is Firefox Theme Changer. You should know that one? Had this since 6 months ago at least. The smiley is a Firefox extension which opens an emoji cheatsheet for use in email, Youtube comments and Facebook. Also had this 6 months or longer.

Most extensions are created by third party developers, and they can change over time including new "monetization" options (if the developer gives fair notice). You should check their options and/or disable them as a test. You can do that on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage.

Try Options to check whether monetization and data sharing can be managed, or if in doubt, disable (or remove).

Any improvement?

@ 1jazzguy :

In one of my posts I asked you :

" Could you give us a list of the add-ons you have installed  ? "

And the answer is ........ (drum roll)

The problem started on January 5. The day of the Quantum update.

1. I just disabled every one of the Extensions. 2. I re-enabled them one at a time, 3. each time I checked opening a new tab with each enable. Now, FINALLY, I'm getting the blank page with the COG wheel that jscher2000 was looking for. (img attached)

I want to thank everyone here who has helped me with this for your time, suggestions, and patience. Turned out to be a simple solution. Go figure.

In the second post in this thread (directed at the OP) it was advised to look for any unfamiliar of suspicious looking add-on ......

And you finally managed to find it (well done  !)

Would you be so kind as to let us know which extension turned out to be the culprit  ? Might be helpful to others with the same problem  !

None of the extensions were the problem. I simply disabled all of them. Then one by one, enabled each and opened a new tab with each enable. Each time, I found new blank tabs. So it may be just that each extension needed a "reset" so to speak. All 9 are functioning and i no longer get the Spark page when opening a new tab.

Extensions as you requested are as follows: (had to do by hand) 1. Download Youtube Video 1.0.1 2. Emoji Cheatsheet for GitHub 2.0.1 3. Emoji Keyboard 4.0.2 4. Flash Video Player for Facebook 63.3.0 5. MP3 from YouTube 1.0.6 6. Simple YouTube to MP3/MP4 Converter 4.0.7 7. Theme Font & Size Changer 62.0 8. To Google Translate 2.2 9. YouTube High Definition 63.1.5

1. Go to Tools>Add-ons>Extensions. 2. Disable all but do not delete. 3. Enable one extension at a time and check to see when opening a new tab if the problem persists.

I just had the exact same problem and that is how I cured it with help from this forum.

As I wrote in my reply at the bottom of the previous page, this is a 'feature' that is part of YouTube High Definition If you want to keep using this extension then you need to disable this extension then you need to disable this in the extension's settings and disable the new tab page feature.

Apparently this extension is no longer hosted on the Add-ons website, but a Google search still shows it with references to the rspark website.
