Why, since three days ago, is firefox loading automatically when I start my computer, though it's NOT in my startup selection?

more options

I don't want Firefox to load every time I start my computer. It didn't, until about three or four days ago. Now it always does. I've checked my Windows 10 configuration, and Firefox is not included in the startup list. I've run a full AVG scan, and it says I've not been infected with anything. Why is this happening, and how can I stop it, please?

When Firefox opens, what page does it show?

You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see what software is getting started (be cautious with disabling services).

Does this also happen if Firefox isn't the default browser?

I'm in lodgings where I need to log in to the local service - it brings me to that page. And when I click "Log In", it takes me to the Google home page as it always did.

Firefox does not show when I run MSConfig. I have no other browser installed, so I haven't tried another - perhaps I should? But I really like Firefox.

I wrote that because it is possible that some software is trying to open a page in the default browser. If you could set another browser as the default browser then Firefox would no longer open.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Let's try this; (Win 7) Press the Windows icon far left of the task bar. On the bottom, select All Programs Locate, and open the Startup folder. What is listed here?

Could this be part of Windows 10's process of reconnecting to a public wi-fi hotspot? If you disable automatic connection for that network, does Windows still open a browser?

It's not a public wifi spot, it does not have an automatic connection. It's not wifi at all, I'm connecting via ethernet. I've been living here three months, and until three days ago this never happened.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Wireless or not, if Windows is set to connect to a network automatically, and the network requires authentication through a browser page, Windows 10 might be doing you the favor of opening the page automatically. Unlike the old days where you would start the browser, it would say it can't connect, you'd have to figure out how to get to the correct sign-in page, etc.

I don't have easy access to Windows 10, but a similar thing seems to be happening recently for the Windows 10 user in this thread: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1098173.
