As i scroll overmy email (AOL) the messages get light as if they have been read. When I choose an email to read, the ones that are lighter (not in bold letters) move to old mail. I may havr missed many messages. Is this a FireFox or an AOL problem? How can I cure it?

First, I suggest updating to the latest current version of Firefox 9.0.1

To verify if Firefox is causing the issue, open another browser such as Internet Explorer and repeat the task. If the problem is also present in Internet Explorer then Firefox is not the issue. If Firefox is the only browser causing the issue then start Firefox in Safemode by referencing the following.
