My selected topic "settings" actually does not really describe my tabs problem. Even though I followed instructions for entering "about:unloads" the expected webpage did not appear. All I got was the same instructions and not a page that included the table and its unload button that was said to be above it. When I select the New Page tab and right click and then select three tabs, the right-click menu only shows the option to "close three tabs." There is not an option to unload three tabs. Yikes! And when I select one tab and click on the one option to unload one tab, the selected tab does not unload. The tab does not unload. The tab does not unload. It is still there. (???) This is very frustrating! I can only close tabs. So far I can only temporarily close them. Could the problem be that I am still using Windows 10? Please advise. Thanks for reading about my problem of not being able to unload my unwanted tabs.

Hi,

You say that when you click Unload for a single tab, "the tab does not unload". Does that mean that just nothing happens after you select that option?

Thank you for replying! After looking more closely at my tab after clicking on the option Unload tab, the tab appears to be grayed out. So, it apparently was unloaded and freed from my pc's memory - at least temporarily. However, since I have over a hundred open tabs, it would be too burdensome and time consuming to single unload all of them that way.

It seems FF's newest design, regarding multiple tabs, has been changed to only allow CLOSING them. There does not seem to be a way to unload them all at once. Regardless, closing a tab is not the same thing as unloading it.

I do not care whether my tabs are unloaded or closed, the fact that my so many tabs are still burdening my pc bothers me. I opened my FF settings and went under General and Startup, and took a look at the repopulating of tabs on Startup. It was already unchecked. So, my tabs should not still be repopulating after startup - but they are! Even after I do a hard close of FF by clicking on Exit, my over hundred tabs come back on automatically.

I am guessing that maybe FF is holding on to my tabs because after my most recent browser crash, I chose the option, Restore Session, instead of Start New Session. So, maybe all I need to do to solve my current tab problem is to open/reload up all my tabs and urge on another browser crash; then select Start a New Session. That might allow my preset to "Do not automatically repopulate tabs" (I am paraphrasing here; I forgot the actual script.) Do you think that method will work as I expect it to?

I did a little more reading about tabs, and it seems that "closing" tabs does spare my pc's memory burden. So, I have begun closing ALL tabs (after bookmarking the ones I want to access easily later), closing all of them to the left of my now small collection of open and active tabs. That way, it seems to be allowing fewer or no crashes of the browser.

Please comment/advise.

Thank you for posting this update!

  1. If I select several tabs in the latest Firefox release, I have the Unload n Tabs option, which effectively unloads them. I think you are facing a bug. If you run Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode, does the issue persist?
  2. The same about tabs reopening on startup. If you have "Open previous windows and tabs" unchecked, I believe Firefox must start a new session on every startup. What you suggested may actually work, I would advice to try at least.
  3. Closing/unloading tabs should have the same effect on memory (and closing is probably even more reliable).

Please post an update on the first two issues, when you have time to try the suggestions.
