I can't find how to create a filter based on current message on the new version of Thunderbird.

That was it. I thought the new version had taken away the facility but it had just removed the Menu Bar. All working now, many thanks.

In 'Message List' select the email to open and display in 'Message Pane'. Via 'Menu Bar' toolbar 'Message' > 'Create filter from message'

If 'Menu Bar' toolbar is not enabled then do this: 'Menu app icon' (3 lines) > 'View' > 'Toolbars' > select 'Menu Bar'
