Firefox randomly breaks websites and makes them unreadable

Hello, everyone.

My browser is doing exactly what it says in the title. My problem is primarily on reddit, since I am a reddit junkie, but it happens on Facebook too. Haven't checked any other sites, really. Randomly, when I click a link (it seems to happen more when it's in a new tab), the page will be missing various features. Much of the text will disappear (and sometimes reappear as I scroll or wait), certain parts of the page will be black when it shouldn't be, and just lots of features are all wonky.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but that didn't work. What do I do? I've attached some images. Sometimes I can read the text if I select it as if I'm going to copy or paste it, but not always.

I would upload an image, but it appears that this page is not cooperating with me either.

Chosen solution

There is an issue reported that affects users who have turned off ClearType font rendering within the Windows settings. A workaround until this is fixed is either to turn ClearType back on or disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox.

There, it seems I can upload images here. Darn finicky technology. I have half a mind to use stronger language. Now is there any way I can share information? I accidentally clicked "post" prematurely.

Thank you so much! It worked like a charm.

I too have this problem. However, there is a twist:

1. ClearType is on. 2. Disabling Hardware Acceleration does not work for me. 3. I'm using Windows 7.

On Reddit? I use the 'dark' theme over there, but I know some sites use this ugly, light-color, gray and fuzzy text. I don't know why. The URL box usually is a light gray (with the main site in black text).

Is the text here in this support area ok?

Did you start to suddenly have this problem? Only certain browser sessions? Does it go away or improve when Exiting and Starting up FF again? (Or a Windows ReBoot?)

It can be memory issues. It can be Extension or Theme conflicts, perhaps.

Have you run the Clear Text program before and gone through the 4-step text screens to adjust for the best, sharpest fonts?

Attached are images of the fonts in this reply I'm typing. It's magnified at 200% (of the 133% FF-Zoomed-in Page). Notice some color fringing. Ideally, the colors should overlap 'perfectly' so there is no color-fringing with the text. I have a super-zoomed-in look of the URL Bar.

My monitor is old, so I don't know if I can get my text looking super sharp like it did when my monitor was new back in 2010. It's still not too bad though.

It also could be due to that the Cleveland Browns are going to win more than just a 'few' games this season! (LoL) (I had to do that.)

This goes beyond Reddit.

1. In one instance of Tumblr, the site would break in the middle of a table parse just before Disqus loads. 2. On YouTube, only the logo picture would load. 3. On Twitter, the CSS file would often times not load, breaking the display. 4. On DeviantArt, the loading stops after the first few pictures load.

Refreshing the page fixes all of this.

I can tell you right away it has nothing to do with the text.

I've been having this problem for quite some time, probably originating on the early days of May and early summer.

UPDATE: Here's an example of what I mean, from Bulbagarden Wikipedia site, Bulbapedia. The left one is incorrect, see how the blue background dominates the entire background, rendering the format out of whack. The right one is the correct version.

The usual to troubleshoot this is to check the Network Monitor for errors about content that fails to load.

You can check the Web Console (Tools -> Web Developer) for messages about blocked content and about the presence of mixed or unsafe content.

You can check the Network Monitor to see if content is blocked or otherwise fails to load.

If necessary use "Ctrl+F5" or "Ctrl+Shift+R" (Mac: Command+Shift+R) to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.
