Upgraded to FF57 and went through all the normal growing pains. One thing that is still missing for me is the pop-up in the lower-left-hand corner that used to appear whenever I moused-over a link. It also showed what the browser was doing (connecting to... transferring... etc). I have tried to with both browser.chrome.toolbar_tips set to both true and false (though I prefer false) to no avail. Oddly, though, it will work at times - though not very often.

I am running Linux Mint 18.3, Cinnamon, with its latest build of Firefox 57.0.1 (64bit)

Turns out that a legacy extension (element help for adblock plus) was causing this. Once I completely removed the extension the problem went away.
