I want to paste a URL into the Firefox address bar and have it open in the same tab instead of opening a new tab every time.

Usually, unless it is a pinned tab, Firefox will use the same tab. Could you check the following hidden setting:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.urlbar.openintab and pause while the list is filtered
