I am currently getting unwanted popups purporting to be from firefox about virus protection. I know they are fake because they report my McAfee license has expired, and it hasn't. I have McAfee scanning for viruses right now. They are generated over again when I close them; so I can't get rid of them.

It's spam. Please read Web Push notifications in Firefox and disable it.

The small popups on bottom right are not from the Firefox web browser but from one or more sites you have allowed to send you notifications. Instead of useful information some may send you junk, spam, fake virus/trojan or antivirus alerts etc. You can revoke these sites as shown in above KB article link.
