when I open a new tab and try to type in a subject for search it will not. but if I select 1 of my frequent places it goes to them

So unless you set a new tab to a homepage search engine it comes up blank that's my experience with Firefox so you have to also set this tab in the settings to something or have to click the "Home" button to start the new tab where home page is set to.
