How do I download text only from a news page to avoid slow and costly videos? Pause, Break, Esc do not stop a download, what does?
Can I stop a page from downloading, once the gist of it, the text has arrived so I can read it without the rest of the unwanted page from slowing other downloads and costing me download fees?

Please post a public link to that web page.
Every news page has them, it is now almost universal. Go to any newspaper's page and you will have this problem. If you want an actual URL, try the Melbourne newspaper The Age http://www.theage.com.au/ Unlike some, their online content is apparently free. There must be some way to stop downloading once a page starts to appear, or is it deliberately restricted so that we are forced to receive the advertising etc?
I used your link. The page loaded without any problem. I found a video near the bottom. No problem there.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options) key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?
Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter. Under the main banner, press the button; Copy Text To Clipboard.. Then in the reply box at the bottom of this page, do a right click in the box and select Paste. This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.
You can use an extension like Adblock Plus or uBlock to block content.
- Adblock Plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
You need to subscribe to a Filter list (e.g. the EasyList).
Hello Normus,
If those doesnt help try
1) NoScript-https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/
2)Reader - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/reader/?src=ss I suggested Reader as it gives you a clutter free environment to read.
Thank you
Thank you Firefix peeps for these replies but they do not answer my question. Obviously it cannot be done. It is apparently impossible to stop a download, apart from closing the link, which loses what has already been downloaded.
To FredMcD, yes of course the link works and everything downloads, that is the whole point. I want to stop the download.
To cor-el, I have adblock, but that stops advertisements. I want to interrupt the download of video content, of my choosing, sometimes.
To nowiz, I don't want to permanently change Firefox, and the problem is not readability. I just want to stop the videos from completing their downloads, not prevent them completely. And it is only for some pages, so I don't want it to be for every tab.
Nothing tried to download for me. Do you remember the file name?
