all of a sudden when I log on to hotmail dot com I get the error message too many requests when I switch browsers to edge I can log on to hotmail as normal
searched the internet but so far have not found a fix
windows 11 and firefox both up to date

I did try your suggestions but no luck
I use PIA VPN - what I did was switch from one PIA server to another one so far I can log on so hopefully it is solved

Did you clear your browser cache? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/clear-cookies-and-site-data-firefox
Also try Clear all items for a single site https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/remove-websites-address-bar-suggestions
You can also Refresh Firefox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings
