I use to have a dropdown menu for my bookmarks set up above my bookmarks toolbar. I believe it was the manage bookmark menu. how do I get this back? Its sudden disappearance has frustrated me greatly, and I would very much like it back. I preferred using it instead of hitting ctrl+b to open the side bar. I hate that side bar. I do not want to be forced to use the side bar. I want my manage bookmarks button back. How do I get it back?

Right click on Toolbar then select customize.

Drag the bookmarks "Star" to address bar.

You now have an star icon for bookmarks drop down instead of the word.

thank you for that. It kind of annoys me that the browser would just spontaneously decide to remove that in the first place...

That old button was removed and Firefox 23 has a new button for the Bookmarks menu - slightly different features than the previous button.

Where is that "new" button located>

Bootlegger -- Thanks for the proposed solution, but it doesn't actually fix the problem.

In Firefox (up to version 22), if you included the Bookmarks button on the Bookmarks toolbar, the button functioned as a "single click" button. In other words, you pointed the mouse at the Bookmarks button, clicked and held down the right-button on your mouse, and then dragged the mouse to the bookmark list, then any sub-lists and sub-sub lists -- and finally, when you reached the bookmark you wanted to open, let go of the mouse button.

You can still get this behavior today by pressing ALT, clicking the mouse on "Bookmarks" on the menu at the top, and dragging it to find the bookmark you want.

However, if you customize the Bookmarks toolbar to include the "star" button, the star button does not work like this. Clicking on the "star" button opens a separate panel that contains your entire bookmarks in a set of expandable/contractable items. So if I want a bookmark that's in a list within a list within a list, I have to click the mouse several times to reach it.

Basically, the old functionality was like the Windows Start menu in Windows XP, whereas the new functionality is the like the Start menu in Vista and Win7.

I can understand why some users might prefer the new functionality. I don't understand why there is no option to return to the old functionality. Hopefully someone will soon write an extension that allows us to have this option!

I managed to solve the problem, although I'm still mystified. I had read some threads on the web that spoke of two Bookmarks star buttons in the Customize panel. I just had one, and when I dragged it to the Bookmarks Toolbar I had zero.

But after my post above, I tried various things, such as dragging the word "Bookmarks" from the top menu to the Bookmarks Toolbar, and dragging them back to the Customize panel. After doing this a couple times, voila! there were now two different star buttons in the Customize panel, but both were identical. After doing this a couple more times, there were two different star buttons in the Customize panel, but they were not identical -- one of them had the word "Bookmarks" twice. Dragging this button to the Bookmarks toolbar solved my problem.

So I think this was a combination of an FF 23 deliberate change and a bug in the Customization system.

However, my fear of Australis has now increased quite a bit. Mozilla seems intent on following Microsoft in its quest to revise software that works well and everyone understands. I wish there were a way to opt-out of these pointless changes, and yet still receive security updates. Oh well.

Hi, I've been having this same problem on my ubuntu laptop. I have both bookmark buttons side by side but when I close the customize window the drop down button dissapears and I'm left with the button that opens the side bar.

I have tried placing the bookmark button in every task bar with no success. (previously the button would only appear if it was in the tab bar)

I'm growing further exasperated by this and would appreciate any help.
