Backup File not being Created

wighty44 replied

FF 154.0 will not create a backup file. Trying to create an initial backup to my D: drive (2 TB Samsung 990 Pro M.2 Gen 4 NVMe SSD with 86% free space). WIN Pro 25H2 Operating system, Intel Core i7-14700K CPU; 64 GB DDR5 - 5600 MHz Corsair Vengeance DRAM.

No matter what I do I can't get the initial backup to complete even though the D:/Restore Firefox folder was created. I consistently get this message, “Hmm, there was a problem with the backup. Please try again in a few minutes.” The message result of browser.backup.backup-debug-info is:

{"lastBackupAttempt":1787153673,"errorCode":9,"lastRunStep":13}

Could you please check if there's anything similar in Browser Console (under "More Tools" in menu) as posted in bugzilla.mozilla.org/2062094 — if it's perhaps the same error you get? Thanks.

I’ve compared my situation to the one you’ve reference. There are similarities and differences: Differences: • My PC: Win 11 Pro (theirs Win 10) • My FF ver 154.0 theirs FF 153.0 • My Browser Console message – was this “warning” [fluent-dom] An element named "icon" wasn't found in the source. • Their Browser Console message: BackupService: Could not create C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Restore Firefox\desktop.ini: NotAllowedError: Could not write to `C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Restore Firefox\desktop.ini': failed to open file for writing (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) BackupService.sys.mjs:4116:23

Similarities: • My browser.backup.backup-debug-info message: {"lastBackupAttempt":1787153673,"errorCode":9,"lastRunStep":13} • Their browser.backup.backup-debug-info message: {"lastBackupAttempt":1786243812,"errorCode":9,"lastRunStep":13}

I tried following this user suggestion: Could you try deleting the desktop.ini at C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\Restore Firefox\desktop.ini and then do a backup? But I do not have any \Restore Firefox folder in my C:\Users\Username\Documents folder

OK the "fluent" log is trivial text warning, not related — so you do not see any BackupService errors logged when you try to run the backup?

(As for deleting files, it would be in your D:/Restore Firefox in your exact case.)

Ok let me recheck a couple items

OK… I turned off the Backup, then opened the Console and cleared all messages found under all the tabs (Errors/Warnings/Info/Logs/Debug) . No messages were found. Then turned on the backup and saw a momentary “Backup in Progress” that was quickly replaced with the “Hmmm, there was a problem backing up” message.

I cycled through all the console tabs but there were no messages shown. A new D;\Restore Firefox folder was created, but it was empty (no files). The browser.backup.backup-debug-info message was {"lastBackupAttempt":1787764036,"errorCode":9,"lastRunStep":13}
