Back up profile contents copied. Profile contents not seen by firefox

When I put the contents of my backup profile in a newly created profile or the initial profile, set firefox to load that profile automatically, and load firefox, it doesn't see anything from the backup. profiles.ini is set to use that profile.
Even if I delete every profile and create a new one, it doesn't see the stuff from the backup.
What can I look into to figure out why this isn't working? Is there some kind of settings file?
