Starting a few weeks ago (I believe when 3.6.16 was released), I lost the ability to return to the first website loaded on any tab by using the Back button or Right Click -> Back menu.

I upgraded to Firefox 4 and I am still seeing the same issue.

This occurs whether the new tab was created from a link on another tab, from an item in my Bookmarks toolbar, or if I click the Open a New Tab button and then enter the initial webpage in the location bar or from my bookmarks toolbar.

When I navigate to the second webpage in that tab via a link, manual entry or bookmark, the Back button does not become active.

If I navigate to additional webpages and right click on the Back button, the first page I loaded is not listed in the history.

Is it possible one of my add-ons or something is causing this issue? I can't think of any possible configuration setting that would cause this.

Otherwise, should I submit a report to Bugzilla? I couldn't find a matching bug report, but this seems like it this would have been reported many times if anyone else were seeing this issue.

Problems with the back button not working are caused by the McAfee Site Advisor, if you uninstall or disable that extension, the back button should work again.

Thanks, that solved it. Any idea if McAfee is aware of the issue and working on a fix for it?

There are quite a few reports of problems with the McAfee Site Advisor when using either Firefox 4 or IE9 listed on the McAfee forums. They state that McAfee are aware of the problems and are working on a solution.

I do not use McAfee software and I am having this issue. I can right-click on the "back-or-forward" buttons and get a history list to choose from (which is far from an improvement), but do not get any response from a left-click. The "back-or-forward" navigation buttons are greyed-out. Also, when I open Firefox (4), I get two title bars at the top with two separate sets of the "minimize", "maximize" and "close" icons. It appears as if one window is open within another, but if I click any of the commands "both" windows respond. It's annoying and cumbersome.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

I want the earlier version of firefox until you fix this where can i go to download it?

@honclemens - I'm not sure that an earlier version of Firefox will help as I saw this in both version 3 and 4. I think it's a problem with the latest version of McAfee SiteAdvisor and I don't know if you can get prior versions of that from McAfee.
