How can I opt out of future Firefox updates

Every time an update for Firefox loads, I spend hours trying to figure out how to get it to work. I would very much appreciate an option to NOT download future versions. It works fine, as was, so quit messing with it.

This happened

Not sure how often

== Whenever an upgrade loads itself

Hello.

To disable automatic updates, go into Tools > Options > Advanced > Update. There you'll find all the necessary options.

Bear in mind that automatic update will not update to new major versions of Firefox without your explicit consent (in that it won't download them, but it will tell when there's a new major version of Firefox). Small updates are for security and stability and are recommended. IF you use an out of date version of Firefox (anything bellow 3.6.8 and 3.5.11 at the moment), you are using a browser that has know unpatched security and stability flaws, and you are, in a nutshell, put your privacy and security at risk. So if you're going to use outdated versions of Firefox, please do so with that knowledge.

Again, and as always, I understand it may be hard for the average user to understand and evaluate the real danger that browser with an outdated browser represents, but once you are affected by an known unpatched security flaw in a browser, you will reach it fast enough. The average user downplays browser security, in my experience, and that's very dangerous. Always use up to date software and an up to date browser in your daily websurfing.

Hello Morbus,

I have the same issue as anonymous user above. In order to work with SharePoint in Firefox, I need to use IE Tab extension. The latest version of FF is not compatible with older version of IE Tab and using the latest version of IE Tab does not 100% work for SharePoint (SP lists are not loaded) . So in order to use IE Tab version 1.5.20090525 I need to have FF version 3.5.11. I do have the automatic updates of FF set to no (see screenshot below). However, FF updates to latest version on daily basis. I checked with our IT admin and he stated that this has nothing to do with automatic updates of Windows.

Any idea / suggestions?

Thanks a lot, Zuska

Hi,

Mmh, it's a strange phenomenom that firefox with this settings will update on daily base.

You can try this:

  • Type in your URL-bar: "about:config" (without the "")
  • Click on that single accept-warning-button to go the about:config page.
  • Type "update" in the search bar at the top of the page .
  • Search "app.update.interval"
  • Double click on it. The default value is 86400 (seconds). Change this value to 31536000 (seconds) (= one year) or higher.
  • Restart your browser

Hopefully now your browser will update after one year (or higher if you choosed a higher value).

Kind regards, Joren

Try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the Safe mode start window.

Zuska,

You can try one of these add-ons which works the same as IE Tab:
