Does the built-in method work? See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/make-firefox-your-default-browser#firefox:win7
If not, you might need to go into some Windows 7 control panel. I don't have Windows 7 handy to check where, but there must be a lot of legacy articles online.
