You may have heard about this, Youtube (and parent Google) have recently declared war on adblockers and non-Chrome browsers. I have reason to believe they have escalated that war to deliberately crash non-Chrome browsers, at least slowing them down to make them non-responsive.

In the past few days, browsing Youtube has caused my system to stop responding requiring a power cycle to clear the problem.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this just a bad setting, or is Youtube acting as malicious as I believe them to be?

We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A list of Submitted (and Unsubmitted, if any) Crash Reports will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Submitted Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

You should now be able to post replies in this thread.

Do you get the crash reporter or does Firefox merely stops responding or freezes or does Firefox merely close ?

The 122.0.1 crash report is about a shutdown hang and probably not relevant, the other report is from an older Firefox version (119.0).

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

UPDATE:

I am still having problems with hangs and crashes while using YouTube. This time, there are two reports that were generated: bp-4c27f7a7-9484-45d4-8184-f1a550240316 bp-ce62d821-4d79-48f3-a87c-abf090240316

Hopefully these reports give an idea as to what is going on when I browse YouTube. I still feel like something criminal is going on since Google has their own ad-blocking protocols in the works for their browsers.

Seriously: Do NOT use similar-purposed blocker(s) along with uBlock Origin: this will cripple uBO's ability to defuse anti-blocker mechanisms and its ability to minimize likelihood of site breakage. ("similar-purposed" = any other blocker making use of EasyList).

Last night I deleted the AdGuard extension, along with a few others not used. That seems to have worked as the freezes and crashes have not happened since.

The real test will come with the next Windows Update rollouts. They really are resource hogs, virtually monopolizing CPU time and HDD bandwidth.
