email keeps telling me password does not work for hotmail.com account
I keep getting this message even though I re entered the password multiple times "Login to server outlook.office365.com with username [edited] @hotmail.com failed"

You get that error because the password is probably wrong. I think Hotmail requires an 'app password' for working with email clients. This link may assist: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/account-billing/manage-app-passwords-for-two-step-verification-d6dc8c6d-4bf7-4851-ad95-6d07799387e9
But that password worked for years and I did not change it. Also that password works on all my other devices and other email programs- just not on that one particular email in Thunderbird
