What can I do to remedy this problem other than having to turn off the VPN? I doubt that it happens with the Mozilla VPN

Did you contact Avast VPN to whitelist the site. Sounds like Avast issue not a Browser issue.
You will have to contact AVG support if you have a problem with their software.
