How to merge bookmarks.html into current bookmarks without duplication

As per the title. Google search's top response for this question returns an archived support.mozilla link from last year (not that long ago really), where the answer does not actually answer the question: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1176355

Any chance of the question being answered accurately?

Firefox does not have a feature to Import AND De-Duplicate. Only Import and let duplicates happen.

There are extensions to help you find and remove duplicate bookmarks, but I think they require a lot of decisions/setup to remove the one you don't want and keep the one you do. I haven't tried them myself, although I should clean up at some point...

If something is holding you back from upgrading Firefox, please let us know so we can suggest solutions or workarounds. Version 49 is not secure.

Note: There is no replacement for the FireFTP and Show Parent Folder extensions in Firefox 57+, and the new ScrapBook extensions are not as mature as the legacy extensions (I haven't looked at them recently to see how they are evolving).

JScher, thanks for your replies.

Back in 2016 (not that long ago really), there was an addon called "Bookmark Deduplicator" which kind of performs the functions I asked about. I have that addon in my FF35.0.1 installation which I run on my Windows 7 machine, and from which I've chosen to 'shock you' by replying from. However, when you look at addons.mozilla.org, you will see that that it's no longer there, and I would speculate that its disappearance is not linked to WebExtensions. Whilst I think the Bookmark Deduplicator addon could be better, I'm lucky I still have something.

You mentioned security. Can you be more specific? I haven't been hacked in 30+ years even though I don't run anti-virus, never check for malware or keyloggers, and don't even bother with a firewall. So, I'm not quite sure what you're afraid of.

About 20 years ago I specifically chose FireFox because of privacy, not security, and I've been using addons like NoScript, RequestPolicy and other tools to ensure my privacy to the best of my ability. I think privacy is a much bigger issue than security, but then that's a subjective opinion which depends on whose team you're playing on or for.

As a top 10 contributor, you must be aware that FF65's screen capture function uploads to the cloud by default using a button that's labelled "SAVE", whilst the actual local save button is titled "Download". How's that for entrapping naive users? I'm not sure how you feel about that, but I'm outraged and very happy that I'm using older versions, because the older they are, the better they were.

Sadly, I think the Mozilla project leaders have either misunderstood or forgotten why FireFox became a popular browser in the first place.

I think you will now understand both why I asked the question and why I'm using old versions of FireFox.

The goal is to have both, no? I don't see where you would be forced to compromise your privacy in the current release of Firefox.

It's admirable that you want to protect other Firefox users, and you can help. What is there now is:

(A) The first time a user engages the function, there is a feature tour explaining the option to save to the web (first screenshot attached)

(B) The Save button has an arrow pointing up into a cloud (second screenshot attached)

Do you think the word Save should be changed to a different word such as Upload? Should the download button point to a disk icon? Should the button colors be different? If you think naive users will be confused, what is the solution?

You can submit your suggestions through a variety of channels:
