Firefox 40.0.x will not launch/run after install or upgrade

I am unable to get Firefox to run after upgrading to Firefox 40.0 from 39.0.3; I have this same issue with the 40.0.2 and the 40.0.3 releases. Reverting back to 39.0.3 and everything is working/normal.

With 40.0.x releases, I receive no error message(s) and am never prompted with the Profile Manager; however, the firefox.exe process is running with nothing unusual (i.e., normal CPU, Memory, Disk Usage, etc.). When attempting to run in Safe Mode, I am never prompted with "Safe Mode" window (Safe Mode / Refresh options).

I have tried a clean install (after uninstalling any existing version), and even though I don't believe firefox is getting far enough to load a profile, I have deleted all profiles... a new default profile is never created. While not too familiar with all the various/available firefox log files, I have browsed through them and see no errors or nothing unusual.

I am on Windows 7 with a decently powered/configured machine, and believe I am familiar with firefox... I have used it for my browser since V2.0 and have always been able to identify/fix any issues or quirks in the past.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You wrote that you downloaded Firefox from www.mozilla.org. Did that make you download the small stub-installer that was prevented as pop-up? You could try installing the full version from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/ instead and see if that helps. If not, please have a look at the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article and perform a full scan for malware.

If it doesn’t help (of before that), you could try renaming firefox.exe to e.g. fireafox.exe and see what happens.

Could you also have a look at the Firefox won't start - find solutions article, especially the "No error message" and "Firefox previously worked" section? If that doesn’t help, the mozillaZine article mentioned at the bottom of it provides some more detailed info.

It’s clear that your issue is valid starting from version 40, but please keep in mind that it could still be caused by other software. I’m not saying that it is, just keep it in mind. Some settings that have always worked with previous versions in such software may now cause problems or need to be refreshed or even require a system restart because of changes (see above). Firewall and other safety software don’t like changes after all and may silently "protect"users without informing them, and even advanced users may overlook things and tend to think "What always worked or not have caused an issue before does not to be checked."

If you want to try again,

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

I have the same issue when attempting Safe Mode -- the firefox.exe process will start, but I am never prompted with the "Safe Mode" window (no window what-so-ever launches).

Are you sure you downloaded Firefox 40 from the official source?

Also, did you install it on a custom location other than the one suggested by Windows?

I am downloading directly from the mozilla.org site, and the install location is not changed from the default (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\).

Could you take a look at this question abd see if Malwarebytes or a similar piece of software is causing this?

more options

I do not have Malwarebytes installed nor do I believe it is any similar program or software; I am using ESET Smart Security and have insured this is not causing an issue by attempting Firefox 40.0.x releases with ESET disabled. In the possibility it could be another piece of software or program -- the conflict would have to be specific to release 40.0.x as release 39.0.3 and all previous releases installed on this machine have functioned without any issue.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions... the comments made me do a double check on other software / programs, and I found my issue -- "Actual Windows Manager" (http://www.actualtools.com/windowmanager/). I was using an OLD version (7.5.1 from 04DEC2013) as I did not see any benefit to upgrading... until now. The current version @ 8.5 released in conjunction with WIN10 resolved all my issues.

You should always keep software up to date. Otherwise . . . . . .
