Firefox for Windows lets you pin sites to your taskbar and run them as web apps. These apps open in their own window and can be pinned to your Windows taskbar, making them feel like standalone applications.

For example, if SUMO (support.mozilla.org) is one of the pages you visit frequently, you can save it as a web app. Clicking its icon will open directly to SUMO, in its own app-like window, without mixing it with your other browsing.

Note: Web apps are only available in Firefox for Windows starting with Firefox version 143. They can be pinned or unpinned at any time without affecting their functionality.

Get started with web apps

When you visit a site, Firefox may show a callout pointing to an icon, showing you how to add the site as a web app, as you can see below.

You can add any website you visit to the taskbar. Here’s how:

  1. In Firefox, click the web apps icon webappicon that appears in the address bar.
  2. Click Add to taskbar.
  3. Firefox will install the site, and it will appear in your Windows taskbar.
    • Firefox will also add a shortcut to the Start menu that you can use to launch the app.

Move the web apps back to Firefox

You can move any page from a web app back into a regular Firefox window by clicking on the web apps button:

  • The tab will open in your most recent Firefox window, or in a new one if no windows are open.
  • If the app was created by moving a tab from Firefox, the tab may return to the original window.
  • If it’s the last open window for that site, the web app will also be uninstalled.

Uninstall the web app

You can uninstall a web app by moving its last open window back into Firefox with the web apps button. If it’s pinned to the taskbar, it will be removed. Web apps will also be removed if you uninstall Firefox.

Note: Unpinning a web app from the Windows taskbar does not remove it from your Start menu.

Common issues

Web app option doesn’t appear

  • Make sure you are using Firefox version 143 or later.
  • This feature is available only on Windows, but not if you installed Firefox from the Microsoft Store. It will not appear on macOS or Linux.
  • Restart Firefox and try again.

Web app doesn’t open after installation

  • Check that Firefox is still installed on your computer.
  • If the shortcut looks broken, remove and add the web app again.

Web app didn’t restore after a crash or update

  • Normally, Firefox restores all windows, including web apps, after a restart.
  • If it doesn’t:
  1. Open Firefox normally.
  2. Click the web apps icon.
  3. Reopen the site from your installed apps list.

Frequently asked questions

Do the web apps work in private browsing mode?

No. They are only available in regular browsing windows.

Can I open new tabs in the web apps?

No. Web apps remove the new tab bar, bookmarks bar, sidebar, and menu bar. The address bar is read-only.

What happens to the web apps if Firefox crashes?

All windows, including web apps, will be restored when Firefox restarts.

Is the web apps feature only available in Windows?

Currently, web apps are only supported in Firefox for Windows. Mozilla is considering adding support for macOS and Linux in the future.
