I want to add a new search engine to the menu in my toolbar. I had done that previously, but an unrelated problem caused me to reset Firefox. When I attempted to install any additional search engine from within Firefox, (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/aol-search/?src=search) and (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/scholar-search/), I got the following error message: "Sorry, you need a Mozilla-based browser (such as Firefox) to install a search plugin" for both. Since I was using Firefox, something is obviously wrong.

Hello check it in Safe Mode, in Safe Mode window select "Start in Safe Mode" and see if this happen again, if not see: Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems

thank you

Please mark "Solved" the answer that really solve the problem, to help others with a similar problem.

And if it does happen while in Safe mode?

Then the problem it is not being caused by an extension or theme, see : The problem happens in Safe Mode

thanks again

I had this problem too. I resolved it by temporarily disabling DoNotTrackMe; maybe this will work for you too.
