VPN is still being rolled out, so maybe a bit flakey. Maybe reset your DNS options if you have any in Windows.
Restart Windows. i.e. Not Power Off which keeps settings.
This is a subscription service as far as I'm aware. "VPN is still being rolled out, so maybe a bit flakey.", is unacceptable as an excuse, if true.
With the NordVPN extension I use for FF it just works, beta or final. Has Mozilla never heard of proper quality control before releasing a subscription VPN?

The built-in VPN in desktop Firefox has never been subscription based. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/built-in-vpn
What is subscription based is Mozilla's standalone Mozilla VPN app https://vpn.mozilla.org
