I needed the extra room on the top so I hid the toolbars. I tried to lower the resolutions first, and when that did not work I clicked out the toolbars, for the space now I do not know how to replace them.

If you can't see the menu bar, tap the Alt key or press F10 to display it.

Then you can use the View > Toolbars list to display and hide various bars.

If you have no menus or toolbars at all, check that you aren't in full screen mode. The F11 key switches between full screen and normal modes.
