The Page Up/Down, Home, End, and arrow keyboard buttons stopped working a few days ago on Firefox 4. They work fine in other browsers and programs. It is NOT Caret Browsing because I pressed F7 and confirmed that it is NOT turned on. i don't believe my add-ons are causing the issue as I haven't added any new ones in a while.

You may have switched on caret browsing.

You can press press F7 (on Mac: fn + F7) to toggle caret browsing on/off.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Accessibility: [ ] "Always use the cursor keys to navigate within pages"

You can still check if not one of the add-ons is causing this problem.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in Safe mode:

  • Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

I don't know what the issue was, but I disabled all of the Add-ons using Safe Mode. Then I just restarted Firefox in normal mode with all of the add-ons enabled again and it seemed to clear up the problem.

I lose "end" & "home" key functionality on most tabs when I have a PDF open in one tab. I also get formatting anomalies such as double line spacing becoming default.

The F7 tip doesn't help the problem.

Any other suggestions?

Already tried disabling all addons and using F7, but nothing worked so far. I still cannot use home, page up/down or end. Any ideas?

Restarting my computer did the trick.

Hmm, strange - seems the reason was the same as with aballard: In one tab a pdf file was open, but now that it's closed, it seems to work just fine. Anybody knows why that behaviour occures?

In my case, if I let the key pressed down, it works; Is there a setting somewhere to modify the "minium time of key press on arrow keys?"

There is a fix that has worked for others at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=640587 This addressed a problem in Firefox 9 that was afflicting mostly Asus owners. On the Bug 640587 page, the fix is offered in Comment 48.
