Can't delete profile

I was in the middle of setting up a secondary profile with sync when the browser froze and became unresponsive for a few minutes. I killed the task and reopened the profile, it lacked the theme color I'd chosen and sync was not enabled. When trying to enable sync, I got the error message shown in the screenshot. To be clear, the profile it's asking me to switch to 'is' the profile I'm in. I've tried deleting the profile and the associated files from About:Profiles, but this issue persists.

I've also followed the steps contained in this issue and associated issues, but the profileID already matches: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1581151

How can I resolve this so that I can sync this profile?

I was able to resolve it by deleting other profiles, backups, and a lock file from the location where firefox stores profiles. I suspect the screenshot above implies two separate half-created profiles have the same profile name, based on the fact there were three profiles ~/.config/mozilla/firefox/ when I'd only ever created a second.
