Bookmarking star icon on toolbar vanishes upon starting Firefox.

I open the customize box then click on the star icon for bookmarking. After closing the customize box, the bookmark icon is in the toolbar. But the next time I restart Firefox, the icon has disappeared. It also disappears if my laptop goes into sleep mode during the day. This all started with Mozilla provided me with the latest version of Firefox. Before that, I had no trouble with using any toolbar extras. Please I need someone who can explain what to do in simple English, in terms of trouble=shooting step by step. Thank you in advance. I am using Windows Vista on a Toshiba Satellite laptop, if that means anything here.

You may have a corrupt localstore.rdf file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/changes-toolbars-and-window-sizes-are-not-saved

You can check for problems with the browser.uiCustomization.state pref on the about:config page.

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
