when viewing streaming video's online, I get a screen sometimes that I believe is fake saying I must update my viewer.... even though I have the latest version of firefox. this is probably a trojan of some kind, as these project free tv sites are definitely suspicious. ....but what viewer might they mean and how can I make sure any viewers firefox may be using are the latest available....?

This window is completely fake and harmless. It's simply a scan to trick you into taking a survey or installing malware on your system. Use this link to make sure all your plugins are up to date: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Firefox viewers are all considered plugins, and this link will tell you if you need to update anything. :) (You can use Adblock or something like that to get rid of these popups)

If you come across something that is misusing Firefox or Mozilla related stuff then report it at http://www.mozilla.org/legal/fraud-report/

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.

  • Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.
  • Plugins should only be updated via the plugin itself or by visiting the home page of the plugin.

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a good add / pop-up blocker.

FredMcD, again there is no popup blocker extensions at a.m.o as the popup blocker is built in Firefox. Why do you keep say that.

there is no popup blocker extensions

Then please to explain what these are?

Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon

Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon extends the blocking functionality of Adblock Plus to those annoying pop-up windows that open on mouse clicks and other user actions.

Only this https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/strict-pop-up-blocker/ and https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/popupmaster/ are related to popup blocker built in Firefox. The others are just going by one of the two words in search.

Adblock is not a popup blocker per say but more for dealing with Ad related things.

And every time a pop-up shows its face, AdBlock gets rid of it.
