I used to use the MetOffice website quite a lot, at least weekly sometimes daily and never had any trouble. Then one day I tried to visit it same as I had every other time and it wouldn't load. I just get the message "The page isn't redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." Nothing had changed on the computer since the time it was loading the MetOffice website and I contacted the MetOffice to see if it was a problem their end. They assured me no, the website was working fine and no maintenance was being carried out. They knew of no reason why it should not be loading. I checked and it will load on IE so I presume it is a problem with Firefox. I searched on here for answers and followed all the advice: I cleared the cache, I cleared the cookies relating to the MetOffice and checked that nothing had been changed and it was all still set to accept cookies and nothing was blocked. Everything was as it was and as it should be. As I said absolutely nothing had been changed on the computer. But the MetOffice site still won't load. This hasn't happened with any other website so I am at a complete loss as to how to fix it and get the website back. I don't like using IE and would rather not have to load it just to look at the MetOffice so if I can fix the problem with Firefox and get back to how it was I will be very happy.

Hi

I have just tried the MetOffice website myself and it opens fine. Have you refreshed Firefox?

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.

Thank you for that. I had to use the second method to access the troubleshooting pge but refresh did exactly what it said it would. I would advise people to make a note of their preferences beforehand so it's easier to set it up the same afterwards, unless you have a much better memory than me. MetOffice loaded fine first time and is continuing to do so. I am very happy :D

Note that this issue can be caused by a problem with cookies. If it happens again then try to clear the cookies of the affected website(s).

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

  • Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window
