Music plays every time I open a new tab. New problem. Nothing stops it. HELP!

This is something that just started and it's driving me crazy. Every time I open a new tab, irritating music starts to play. I have done all the other solutions I saw, including installing and then disabling CoolPreview, which I never had to start with. I have done a complete system scan and no malware was found. don't know what is causing this but I want it to end. I have not added any new add-ons or extensions. It sounds like cheesy video game music or PCH music. Any ideas?

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). While you may not have installed a new extension, an extension you already had installed may have updated to include a new feature.

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

Safe Mode Fx 15 - Win

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Thank you for trying, but it's still happening, even in safe mode with all add-ons disabled. I'm at a loss to explain this.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Here is what I had to do to get rid of the music that was playing ever time I opened a tab or searched.

I had to turn Sync off and reinstall Firefox, something in the Sync file is screwed up. After doing this so far I have no music playing when opening tabs or searching. I played with this for 3 days and that the only thing that's worked.

Unless support can find a better answer.

Update 3/15/2015

I have another little update I found that also causes the problem. If you open a new tab and you see one of PCH showing it that tab the music will also play. If you delete that link in the the new Tab it sound stop it for playing any more.

Safe mode did not stop the problem. I only have one device so I do not have the sync set up. I ran the malwarebytes detection, quarantined all questionable finds, restarted my laptop and still have the sound when I open new tabs. Help pleasee!

You can check the value of the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page.

See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

You can check for recently installed suspicious or unknown extensions.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

I found out what was happening!

ginabgood1 mentioned music from PCH, I, foolishly, signed up with them too (then unsubscribed because they were sending me TONS of "entries" constantly) and it was after that I had this problem.

Even though there was not a link to them on my new tab page the music would play every time I opened a new tab. What I did was start deleting the links at the bottom right of the page, I eventually had a PCH link page show up and deleted it. The music has now stopped playing whenever I open a new tab.

Thank you for all the details on how to fix the problem. I appreciate your help. I also understand how PCH bombards email with TONS of messages. What a pain. However, the pain would lesson if I had won big money!  :-)
