Why does my email almost freeze and take a long time to copy to send file?

Sometimes it works fine after hitting send as it used to. But others, it takes maybe a full minute then prompts me to try again...whereupon it works.

Solução escolhida

I have DSL, maybe not the fastest but not usually slow at all. I called the server and we tested a few times. Could not duplicate problem. I'm going to try a different email program. I hope I can export everything from Thunderbird to EmClient. Thanks for everything.

What is your anti-virus software?

My anti virus is AVG Free.

I've had it all along and only recently has my Thunderbird email been getting weird.

I tried to do what you suggest above and went to the Windows7 site for directions. I couldn't seem to get it to start in Safe mode, nevermind open Thunderbird in Safe mode. It just seemed to open normally except for a screen that had me choose some things I could not decifer.

I appreciate your attempts to help me here. Thank you. My name is Jared. I'm in Maine.

Jared, what is your problem with getting into Windows safe mode?

I don't know. I did what the promts told me to do in the Windows7 Safe mode directions, but it seemed to start normally anyway. You can tell I'm no computer wiz. I'm older!

Without more specific information at which point you're struggling there's not much I can do.
The instructions aren't that difficult.

I'll try again. I agree; the instructions seem simple enough. I don't think I'm even getting into safe mode. I don't know what safe mode means, or what you can or cannot do in it. Computers and I are a risky partnership. I do thank you for your efforts.

Safe mode will help to determine whether the problems you see with Thunderbird are caused by AVG.

Question owner

When I follow the directions and press F8 while restarting (Windows7) I get a box with 3 choices.1) P1: HL-DT-ST SVDRAM GH24NS95 2) P0: ST500DM002-1BD142 (476940MB) 3) ENTER SETUP

Below it says: up or down arrows to move selection

                      ENTER to select boot device
                       ESC to boot using defaults

Nowhere does it say SAFE MODE and once I enter, it seems to start normally with no safe mode notice. Only on ENTER SETUP it goes to some funky screen with all kinds of dials and gauges giving performance data, etc. I've tried all three choices and can make no sense of any.

Somebody out there said, "I have this problem too". Have you fixed it? If so, how? Does anyone suggest that Thunderbird might be less than decent with problems like this? Anyone ever changed to EmClient?

You probably hit F8 too early and ended up in the BIOS.

Assuming AVG is the culprit, make sure it isn't scanning the Thunderbird profile folder, and don't let it scan incoming and outgoing messages and attachments.

OK. How do I do that (make sure it isn't scanning)? I did hit f8 and hold it right away from hitting restart. Is BIOS the thing with all the gauges and dials? Do you mean never let it scan incoming and outgoing or just for this test? I've not said that sometimes, many times in a row, the sending to sent function works fine and fast. Then it will start almost freezing. It comes up with "sending to sent file failed...try again? I hit OK and it works. It also indicates that Thunderbird connection has timed out or something to that effect at that point. What about changing to EmClient?

Hit Esc and then immediately the F8.

The mini menu is a lower level in the boot sequence that the Windows safe mode.

Further, is you are using a Lenovo (that is the one I know of) the manufacturer has changed the safe mode keystrokes. Please consult their documentation or their web site for instruction on entering "Windows safe mode" or Google the term and your computer brand and perhaps even model for specific instructions.

I tried what you suggest. I don't know when to hit Esc. During bootup? Exactly when? Your sentence about mini menu...I don't understand. What's a Lenovo? I Googled Windows 7 Safe Mode but when I did what they suggested, I did not get to a "boot modes screen", so I've still not achieved a safe mode yet to even try it. If this is some problem common between AVG and Thunderbird, I'd gladly lose the Thunderbird. It's really a pain as I have to wait maybe a minute after sending an email to continue working. When it finally says "Try again" and I click ok, it goes like normal.

Thank you, Matt. Any attempt at assistance is appreciated.

What brand and model is the computer your using?

Not sure what you want here. Disc Drive: ST500DM002-1BD142 ATA Device DVD-CD ROM: HLDFSTDVDRAMGH24NS295 ATA Device AMD A4-5300 APU w/ Radeon HD Graphics 3.4Ghz RAM- 8GB 64 bit Operating System
