I'm a newbie. I am financially obligated to have an ATT/Yahoo email acct. It is 2-factor ID. Can't properly save and utilize the email there, but must keep acct. Need to set up Thunderbird so that I can transfer/save those emails to Thunderbird. ZERO help from Yahoo... If it is possible to do, hoping someone can give easy steps to accomplish. What is your computer's operating system?

If I understand your situation, you need to keep mail on Yahoo's servers, but you also want to have copies of it on you local computer. Right? If so, setting up an IMAP account in Thunderbird would probably be the best option. IMAP means that the messages and folders on the server are mirrored on your computer. If you delete a message on the server via the Yahoo web mail page, it will be deleted on your computer as well. And vice versa - if you delete it on your computer it will be deleted on the server, too. But you can also copy or move messages to local folders, which exist outside the IMAP account.

Yahoo accepts two different kinds of authentication. The most secure is OAuth2. When you opt for that method, when you first connect with Yahoo you will be asked for your user name and password. Thunderbird will then accept a token from Yahoo that says, 'Yes, I know who you are and I will let you manage your email.' The token is stored locally like a password, but it's not the password.

Yahoo also accepts the older, less secure authentication method, plain old passwords. However, for that, Yahoo requires that you create an "app password" which is distinct from your regular password. Here's an article describing that process:

I believe that if you use OAuth2 authentication, 2-factor authentication is not relevant.

So, to get this going, download Thunderbird from the official site (https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/). I recommend you install the ESR (Extended Support Release) version rather than the "Release" version - it's more stable. After installing the program, the first time you run the program, you will be prompted to set up your Yahoo account. Thunderbird will choose appropriate settings, including OAuth2, for you based on your @yahoo.com address. You'll be prompted for your Yahoo password (regular, not an 'app password'), and that should be it. You will see all the email and folders in your Yahoo account copied to your computer. You can then manage (read, write, save, delete, etc.) your Yahoo mail on your computer.

Lin, Thanks for the info. Downloaded Thunderbird ESR. Can't install because of XPCOM. Tried all ways I can think of (net, sites, columns, etc), but no joy. Totally frustrated. Can you help with this? scooter
