Why would my in-box quit displaying the messages I received?

I pressed the "Receive Messages" button, several messages downloaded, I selected to deleted some messages, the screen flashed and all messages disapeared from my in-box. I checked the Trash but the lost messages are not in either the Inbox nor the Trash.

I'm not sure hwat to make of "screen flashed ... and messages disappeared".

Are you using an exchange server? Does problem go away if you start Thunderbird in safe mode? - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
