my thunderbird email account is not running, and i am trying to re-load it. i need to sign in to do this with my email address [which i have] and my password [which i don't, not used for years]. how do i get a new password or revive the old one?

Thunderbird retains last password you provided at settings>Privacy&security. But the fact that you need one indicates that it isn't valid anymore, if present. So, you need to contact your email provider.
