Note: Immediately after posting that question, I tried (unsuccessfully) to withdraw or delete it, after realizing that it was not complete. In retrospect, I think it may be a case of misunderstanding a new computer and OS (giving a different view of the menu), combined with new TB behavior (no longer reporting attempts to connect to IMAP server if there are no new messages). I will watch it, and if necessary will restart with a new question. For now, I apologize for the forum noise. Thanks.

Now, if only I could find that "Solves the problem" button to close this out ...
