When I try and open any link on an email I get an error message: "This file does not have an app associated with it to perform this action. Please install an app or if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Settings page". This occurred from start up this morning.

That appears to be a problem with your pc's operating system (Windows?). If windows, click to the default apps utility in windows and set there.
