How do I keep my laptop from shutting down when unattended after10 minutes or longer

When I leave my laptop on and unattended while making a phone or receiving a phone call the program shuts the computer down but not off like in sleep mode. Is there a way I can keep this from happening? I am not sure on the time frame when the shut down occurs as I haven timed it as I am away from the computer.
