Greetings Anton,

Do they show up in "Recent Bookmarks"?

That's what happened to mine, as well as being placed in my First Folder, of "Show Your Bookmarks" folder.

Hi Anton, where were you used to seeing them before? For example:

Thank you David and Jscher for your replies.

I normally see them in Bookmarks, right at the top of the page starting, from the top right-hand corner: File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help.

Now I can only see the added bookmarks if I open History, show all History and then all Bookmarks.

Where do I find Recent Bookmarks and First Folder, of "Show Your Bookmarks" folder, David

Revision, the library technique to view recently added bookmarks doesn't work this morning!

Hi Anton, Recent bookmarks is a list here:

"3-bar" menu button > Bookmarks

It should be a reverse chronological list of recently added bookmarks regardless of what folder they were saved in.

Do you still have bookmarks on that list?

If your menu bar (File, Edit, View...) is not displaying, you can turn that back on: Restore the Menu bar in Firefox.

And if you use Ctrl+Shift+O (as in Organizer) to open the Library window, it should start by displaying the contents of the "Other Bookmarks" category. Does that work on your Firefox?

Thanks for getting back jscher2000.

"Do you still have bookmarks on that list?" Yes I do and below the recent bookmarks are a lot of items that I did not bookmark but just looked at.

"If your menu bar (File, Edit, View...) is not displaying, you can turn that back on: Restore the Menu bar in Firefox."

No, that is displaying but when I look in bookmarks there I do not see my recently added bookmarks.

on the other hand, when perform your "And if you use Ctrl+Shift+O (as in Organizer) to open the Library window, it should start by displaying the contents of the "Other Bookmarks" category. Does that work on your Firefox?" manoeuvre, I do see all my recently added bookmarks. Thanks a lot for the tip.

Hi Anton, I am a little concerned about this one:

Normally Firefox would not add bookmarks on its own. Is it possible that you have any add-ons that automatically add bookmarks?

If you open the Bookmarks menu from the menu bar and click Other Bookmarks (around the 6th row of the menu) to expand that sub-menu, are the new bookmarks being added there?

Firefox usually just keeps using the same location until you save a bookmark in a different location. If Firefox isn't showing you the editor panel for new bookmarks, on a page you just bookmarked, click the blue star in the address bar to open the Edit Bookmark panel and check the box for "Show editor when saving". Then you should be able to change the save location to Bookmarks Menu for the next bookmark.

There's also a "back door" way to turn that on if the interactive method doesn't work:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste bookmarks.editdialog.showForNewBookmarks and pause while the list is filtered.

(3) If the preference has a value of false, double-click it (or click the Toggle button at the right end of the row) to change its value to true

No. Just some websites I must have visited at some stage.

Did that and now I can no longer see bookmarks I saved when I do the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+O

Did that. No bookmarks being saved. Thanks for your generous help

If you can't save a new bookmark, please close Firefox and do a regular shutdown/restart of Windows. The purpose of that is to free up file locks.

If Firefox still can't save new bookmarks after that, let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

OK. When I open "Bookmarks" at the top of the toolbar nothing is saved. If open using Crtl+Shift+O I seen nothing but if I keep on going down, down I seen that all my folders have been duplicated and in the duplicated files I can see the bookmarks I have saved! This is not the case with the "Bookmarks" at the top of the toolbar".

Should I deleted the first set of folders wherer there is no sign of my bookmarks being saved?

Sorry but I have to switch my machine off now. Orders from the missus. But thanks million for all your suggestions. See you tomorrow if you are still willing.

Sorry, I thought I pasted this yesterday (perhaps I forgot to post):

> Task: checkIntegrity + The places.sqlite database is sane + The favicons.sqlite database is sane > Task: checkCoherence + The database is coherent > Task: expire + Database cleaned up > Task: vacuum - Unable to vacuum database > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.

Hi Anton, your Verify Integrity report looks good.

To try to summarize the situation:

(1) Using menu bar > Bookmarks (or Alt+B), you do not see the bookmarks you expect to see, when you look at that first level of the listing.

What if you click Bookmarks Toolbar or Other Bookmarks to show the contents of the other two main categories?

(2) Using the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+O), you can find the bookmarks in an unexpected location:

If open using Crtl+Shift+O I seen nothing but if I keep on going down, down I seen that all my folders have been duplicated and in the duplicated files I can see the bookmarks I have saved! This is not the case with the "Bookmarks" at the top of the toolbar".

Normally, the Library window starts by showing the contents of the "Other Bookmarks" category. If you look at the categories in the left column, are you finding the missing folders under Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, or Other Bookmarks?

Please ignore the History section of the Library for now.

"What if you click Bookmarks Toolbar or Other Bookmarks to show the contents of the other two main categories?"

A random collection of sites I may have bookmarked or visited in the past.

". If you look at the categories in the left column, are you finding the missing folders under Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, or Other Bookmarks?"

I have "Bookmarks menu" under which are featured my various categories, until I reach a second "Bookmarks menu" under which are featured, once again, my various categories, in which the items I benchmark are shown.

I'm not sure how your folder hierarchy got duplicated. Unfortunately, I think you need to clean that up by hand, although an add-on like the following might help:

Yes, it is a mystery isn't it? When you say "clean up by hand" do you mean delete the duplicates?

A thought. If I export my "messed up" bookmarks system, is there anyway of importing it again, and cleaning "up by hand" in a separate tab or something in case something goes wrong, or would I have to do that on a separate PC?

Anton

It's a great idea to export your bookmarks as a backup. However, when you import a "bookmarks.html" file, it adds to your bookmarks rather than replacing, so you would need to account/prepare for that with your internal cleanup.

That was prompt. Thanks. "However, when you import a "bookmarks.html" file, it adds to your bookmarks rather than replacing it". I thought it would update the bookmarks!
