Hello

About 6 months ago I posted this question to support: (and yes I am still having this problem).

(Original question/reply here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1144965) /questions/1144965

---

I am having an issue with Firefox.

I can be browsing the web, and very randomly web sites will stop loading. There is nothing wrong with my connection, I can use a different browser, and sites load fine.

I have had this issue for the last two months or so, currently using version 49.0.2.

I have backed up my profile, completely uninstalled firefox, re-installed and I am still having this problem.

All it takes is to shut down firefox and restart it again, however this is incredibly frustrating if i am logged into a site, like internet banking and so on.

Anything i can try to fix this ?

---

I have now got a clue what is causing this.

Each time this occurs I have noticed that firefox is consuming over 1GB Memory via task manager (under processes).

As such, could someone from Mozilla please look into why the resource usage is so high.

Thank you.

Hello Ray,

Your last question appears to be /questions/1144965 {Your link pasted above collected an additional character - I will fix that }

You mention

... The issue does not seem to be present in Safe Mode, so I have tried the alternatives listed. ...

Are you able to confirm that is still the case (or comment otherwise) please ?

I must stress we are not trying to blame you for your choices of customisation of Firefox.

I am certainly not suggesting that you permanently use Firefox in its safe mode. Instead I thank you for trying to find out what happens in Firefox's safe mode because that is going to assist anyone trying to help you.

Please note

  • An ordinary reinstall of Firefox will often NOT normally solve issues.
  • The Firefox Refresh may work as a quick fix, but AVOID doing that if you have someone trying to help you, because there are often much better options, that will not result in you losing what may be valuable addons.

Hi Ray,

Your problem could be caused by Multiprocess (e10s) .

You can check whether you have this feature turned on as follows : • '3-bar' menu button => ' ? ' button => Troubleshooting Information • type 'about:support ' (without the commas) in the address bar and press Enter/Return In the first table on the page, check the row for 'Multiprocess Windows' and see whether the number on the left side of the fraction is greater than zero. If so, you are using e10s - otherwise it should read : 0/1 (Disabled).

If you are using e10s: You could turn it off as follows : Type in the address bar about:config (promise to be careful, if asked) Type and search for the preferences : browser.tabs.remote.autostart and set it's value to false browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 and set it's value to false

Note: the exact name of the preference may vary, but it will start with browser.tabs.remote.autostart

Please note that if you do solve issues by disabling multi process Firefox we need to know about it.

We know multi process Firefox is very complicated and interacts with many things including a lot of add-ons and the use of touchscreens and accessibility features.

Multi process is intended to be an improvement. Where it fails, breaks something, or makes something worse we need to know. Please start a new question of your own if you have problems with multi process Firefox. If you do start a question I suggest you include

e10s

in the title of the question. For example

e10s Firefox stops loading webpages

That may help us in looking at multi process issues. Otherwise you are going to get left behind and lose out on a lot of improvements.
